Kandhar Alangaram - The Divine Spell (10) : Boundless Grace



Sollugaikku illai endru ellaam izhandhu summa irukkum

ellaiyul sella enai vittavaa ikal velan nalla

kolliyai serkkindra solliyai kalvaraik kovvai sevvaai

valliyai pulkindra maalvarai thol annal vallabaney.

“O Mighty Lord of the Vel!
You whose mountain-like shoulders lovingly embrace Valli—the maiden of the Kurinji hills,
she who sings in the sweet Kolli pann,
whose lips are red like the kovai fruit,
whose form is slender like the tender Valli creeper—
You are the glorious One who guided me toward the silent state where nothing remains to be spoken.”

In Sangam literature, the Valli creeper is a delicate millet vine that grows in the mountain regions. Like that tender creeper, Valli is portrayed as soft and graceful. Her lips are compared to the bright red kovai fruit. The melody she sings is the Kolli pann—a musical mode played on the Marudha yaazh during moments of love, longing, playful estrangement, and joy between lovers.

And the Lord, with shoulders firm and majestic like mountains, embraces her with love.

The individual soul (Jeevātma) too is like Valli.

A soul filled with tenderness, loving speech, and joyful devotion toward the Divine is embraced by the Lord through His mighty arms of compassion.

When all worldly attachments fall away,
when words cease,
when thoughts no longer arise,
and the mind rests in a clear and undisturbed silence—
that is the threshold of wisdom.

The One capable of leading us into that sacred silence is Murugan Himself—the Lord whose greatness can never truly be contained within words.

And when the soul is embraced within the arms of the Divine, it enters that realm of wisdom
and ultimately attains the Lord Himself.

This universe is made up of the five elements. Among these five elements, it would not be an exaggeration to say that water is the one closest to our minds.
